Record Levels of Hunger in Twin Cities: Food Banks Call for Urgent Donations as Holidays Approach

As the holiday season approaches, the Twin Cities are grappling with an unprecedented level of hunger. Second Harvest Heartland, a leading food bank serving Minnesota and western Wisconsin, is facing soaring demand for its services. CEO Allison O’Toole warns that this year is on track to be the hungriest year in history. In response to a viral social media post about food bank donations, O’Toole emphasizes the importance of understanding the specific needs of local food shelves.

While the viral post suggests various items that could be donated, such as spices and can openers, it doesn’t necessarily reflect the true needs of each food shelf. For example, the post discourages donations of pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles. However, the Prop Food Shelf in Eden Prairie is currently experiencing a shortage of these items. On the other hand, they have an ample supply of mac and cheese, which was listed as a desired donation in the viral post.

It’s essential for donors to consult their local food shelves to determine their specific needs. While some items may be in surplus, others, such as coffee, tea, paper goods, and personal hygiene products, are frequently in high demand. These items often go overlooked but are essential for the well-being of those in need.

Both Second Harvest Heartland and Prop Food Shelf also stress the importance of time and monetary donations. Volunteers are needed to provide assistance to the 4,000 guests served by Prop Food Shelf, while Second Harvest relies on volunteers working three shifts a day, six days a week. Additionally, food banks can often purchase staples at a discounted rate, making cash donations incredibly valuable for maximizing their impact.

As the holiday season approaches, it is crucial for the community to come together and support those struggling with hunger. By understanding the specific needs of local food shelves and offering both time and monetary contributions, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most. Let’s ensure that no one goes hungry during this time of year.
