Four cheeses that could potentially have been included in Christmas hampers have been recalled due to concerns over potential E. Coli contamination. Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese Ltd, the manufacturer of the cheeses, has issued the recall as a precautionary measure. The affected cheeses may have been sold as a full block or as individual portions, and could have been provided as part of a hamper or gifted for Christmas.
In some cases, the cheese may have been served as part of a charcuterie grazing platter. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned that it may not always be clear if an affected product has been purchased. Therefore, consumers are advised to contact the retailer they bought their cheese from to determine if it is part of the affected batches. In the meantime, they should not consume the cheese and ensure it is stored safely, fully wrapped, and kept separate from other foods.
The cheeses that have been recalled are Mrs Kirkham’s Mild and Creamy Lancashire, Mrs Kirkham’s Tasty Lancashire, Mrs Kirkham’s Mature Lancashire, and Mrs Kirkham’s Smoked Lancashire. Anyone who has purchased these cheeses can return them to the shop for a full refund. The recall applies to all size packs of the four cheeses bought since October 1, 2023.
E. Coli contamination can cause symptoms such as severe diarrhea, including bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and, in some cases, haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure and be fatal.
It is important to prioritize the safety of consumers and take immediate action when there is a potential health concern. Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese Ltd has acted responsibly by recalling the affected cheeses. Consumers are advised to follow the guidance from the FSA and contact the retailer if they have any doubts about the cheese they have purchased.
This recall serves as a reminder to always be vigilant when it comes to food safety, especially during the festive season when hamper gifts are popular. Ensuring that products are stored properly and checking for any recalls or warnings can help safeguard against potential health risks.
