Rams tight end Tyler Higbee suffered a serious knee injury during Sunday night’s game against the Lions, after taking a low hit from Lions safety Kerby Joseph. The low tackle has sparked some criticism, but the Lions defenders are defending their actions, stating that it aligns with how the NFL instructs them to tackle in order to reduce concussions.

Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone took to social media to explain, stating, It’s how the league office asks us to tackle. He further added that the responsibility also lies with the quarterback, as he shouldn’t have exposed his receiver to such a hit by throwing the ball over the middle.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson, a Lions safety, echoed Anzalone’s sentiments, saying, If anybody on the Rams feel like it was dirty, well tell his quarterback don’t put the ball in a place where he gets his player hurt.

Joseph himself expressed remorse for the injury, writing on social media, I’m praying for bro and his family. I don’t have any intention to hurt anybody or harm their career. He emphasized that it was an unfortunate accident, not an intentional act.

While the hit resulted in a serious injury, the Lions defenders maintain that it was within the rules. They highlight the inherently dangerous and violent nature of the sport, where certain plays, like cut-blocking defensive ends at full speed during run plays, are also deemed legal.

The NFL has been actively working to address player safety concerns, particularly concussions. The league has implemented various rules and guidelines in an effort to reduce the risk of head injuries. While this incident has sparked a debate about tackling techniques, it remains to be seen whether further action will be taken to address the issue.

As news of Higbee’s injury spreads, fans, analysts, and players are expressing their opinions on the matter. The incident serves as a reminder of the fine line that players walk between playing aggressively and ensuring the safety of their opponents.

Football, known for its physicality, continues to grapple with balancing player safety and the intensity of the game. The discussion surrounding this particular low hit underscores the ongoing debate and challenges faced by the NFL in protecting its athletes while preserving the nature of the sport.

As Higbee’s injury is assessed and his recovery begins, the spotlight remains on player safety and the measures taken to prevent such incidents in the future. The NFL will likely continue refining its rules and regulations to strike the delicate equilibrium between a thrilling spectacle and the well-being of its players.
