Pacific Games: Rami Eyeing Second Appearance to Represent Country
Representing a country is undoubtedly the pinnacle of any rugby league player’s career. Port Moresby Vipers lock forward Abel Rami, who was overlooked by the PNG Hunters selectors a few seasons back, still believes in his abilities and hopes to represent his country in the future.
With the upcoming PM’s XIII fixture in September and the end-of-year Tri-Series between PNG, Cook Islands, and Fiji, local players are striving to earn a coveted call-up. However, with the presence of talented players in the Super League, Queensland Rugby League (Hostplus Cup), and NRL, the local Digicel ExxonMobil Cup players face tough competition and may not receive much consideration.
Nevertheless, these local players are determined to keep pushing themselves and strive for success in order to catch the attention of the PNG Rugby Football League and PNG Kumuls selectors.
For Rami, his first step towards achieving his goal is to focus on the small details and ensure everything is in order. His immediate aim is to represent his country in the upcoming Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.
Rami had the opportunity to be part of the final 15-member squad that represented Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Games held in Apia in 2019. Despite losing the gold medal to Fiji, Rami played in every pool game, including the grand final.
Under the guidance of Leonard Tarum, the team clinched a silver medal, but Rami now seeks another chance to shine on the international stage.
I want to play for my country again, expressed Rami. Back in 2019, I had the opportunity to play for Mendi Muruks in the 9s. Today, I believe I have gained enough experience and skills to excel and bring home the gold.
Rami’s determination to represent his country once more highlights the passion and dedication he holds for rugby league. As he continues to work hard and hone his skills, he aims to catch the attention of the national selectors and earn a spot on the team.
The Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands will provide a platform for Rami to showcase his talent and prove himself as a valuable asset to the national team. With his sights set on bringing home the gold, Rami’s drive and commitment are evident.
As the selection process unfolds in the coming months, Rami, along with other hopefuls, will face stiff competition from players in higher-profile leagues. Nonetheless, his belief in his abilities and determination to represent his country make him a formidable contender.
Ensuring his performances on the field stand out will be crucial for Rami to catch the attention of the selectors. If he can deliver standout performances and showcase his versatility as a lock forward, his dream of representing Papua New Guinea once again may become a reality.
As the Pacific Games approach, the spotlight will be on Rami as he seeks to make his mark and contribute to the success of the team. His journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring rugby league players who dream of representing their country and achieving greatness on the international stage.
With his unwavering dedication and desire to succeed, Abel Rami is a shining example of the perseverance and passion required to fulfill one’s dreams. As he pursues his goals, his story will undoubtedly inspire future generations of rugby league players in Papua New Guinea.
