Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has criticized the Congress party for their “democracy-under-threat” attacks on the current government and has reminded them that the imposition of the emergency was one of the biggest blows to democracy. Singh was addressing a public gathering as part of the BJP’s outreach program, “Sampark Se Samarthan,” which marks the completion of nine years of the government at the Centre. Singh also criticized opposition parties for their meeting in Patna, alleging that they were misleading people with baseless allegations against the Narendra Modi government. Over 32 leaders of more than a dozen political parties attended the meeting hosted by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Singh said that the opposition wants to remove Modi and the BJP government but emphasized that the BJP “has got the trust of the people.” Singh attacked the Congress by saying that it “unleashed one of the biggest blows to democracy” and is now saying democracy is under attack under the leadership of Modi.
Singh spent eighteen months in jail during the Emergency and lost his mother in that time. He also took on the AAP government in Punjab over law-and-order issues, asking that there should be an initiative from the government’s side towards maintaining law and order in the state. Singh also spoke about efforts made by the government to become self-reliant in military weapons and equipment and said that the country which used to be one of the biggest importers is now among the top 25 countries in terms of exports in the defence sector.
