The Indian Railways has ordered its zonal headquarters to ensure that all station relay rooms and compounds housing signalling equipment have double locking arrangements in the wake of the recent triple-train accident in Odisha. Initial investigations into the incident, which killed 275 people and injured more than 1000, indicate that possible sabotage and tampering with the electronic interlocking system led to the accident. The Railway Board’s letter to general managers of all zones also called for a safety drive to be launched immediately with a special focus on all goomties within station limits. The results of the drive should be sent to the board by June 14, it said, while suitable follow-up action should be taken on all deficiencies and irregularities noticed during the drive.
