Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Northeast Frontier Railway has launched a crackdown on illegal/ unauthorised hawker/ vendors, smokers and litterers in stations, prosecuting 4661 persons as well as recovering an amount of INR 10.54 lakh in the past two months. RPF has collected INR 3.20 lakh in fines from illegal/ unauthorised hawkers/ vendors and prosecuted 1077 persons during April and May from five divisions of NF Railway. Additionally, INR 1.74 lakh and INR 5.59 lakh was collected in fines from persons smoking and littering respectively at station premises. 926 smokers and 2658 litterers were prosecuted as a result of the drives.
According to the press release, 75 major railway stations have been freed of illegal hawking, and RPF will continue to make efforts to ensure that major railway stations remain free from unauthorised vending and that the quality of food available to passengers is improved. The drives aim to improve public sanitation at railway stations as well.
The Railways Act, 1989 prohibits illegal hawking, smoking, and littering in trains and station premises under section 144 (A), under section 167 and under section 145, respectively.
