Rahul Gandhi Criticizes PM Modi for Neglecting Manipur Ethnic Violence amid Israel Conflict
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of prioritizing the Israel-Hamas conflict over the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. Speaking at a public rally in Aizawl, Gandhi criticized the BJP for destroying the idea of Manipur and neglecting the plight of the state.
Gandhi expressed shock at the situation in Manipur, stating that the state is no longer unified but has been divided into two states along ethnic lines. He condemned the violence that has resulted in numerous deaths, sexual assaults, and the killing of innocent children. Despite these disturbing events, Gandhi asserted that the Prime Minister has not deemed it important enough to visit the region.
The Congress leader also questioned the media’s coverage of the crisis, highlighting the extensive focus on the Israel-Hamas conflict while neglecting the situation in Manipur. He criticized the national media for emphasizing international issues while failing to address the problems within the country.
Gandhi highlighted the Congress party’s efforts in bringing peace to Manipur through a peace accord signed in 1986. He accused the BJP of attacking various communities, religions, and languages, promoting hatred and violence within the nation. According to Gandhi, this aggression poses a threat to the idea of India that embraces diversity, tolerance, and mutual respect.
Amidst the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s support to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The External Affairs Minister reiterated India’s stance of advocating for direct negotiations and the establishment of an independent and viable state of Palestine, living in peace with Israel.
The ethnic clashes in Manipur began in May and have claimed the lives of over 160 people, with hundreds more injured. The violence was triggered by a protest by the hill districts against the demand for Scheduled Tribe status by the Meitei community, which constitutes the majority of Manipur’s population.
