Munich-based Quantum Systems has teamed up with Airbus Defence and Space to embark on a research project focused on artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative, funded by the German Ministry of Defence and named KITU 2 (Artificial Intelligence for tactical UAS), aims to demonstrate and analyze the AI building blocks required for swarms of tactical unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in a real-world scenario.
The partnership allows each company to leverage its strengths and expertise. Airbus Defence and Space will contribute trusted swarming algorithms, simulation environments, and experimental hardware, as well as the necessary AI building blocks. Meanwhile, Quantum Systems will provide its battle-proven Vector 2-in-1 tactical aerial reconnaissance platform, which comes equipped with AI edge-computing capabilities. The platform can be deployed as a fixed-wing eVTOL Vector or as the multicopter Scorpion UAS, enabling the formation of heterogenous swarms and showcasing missions with a flight endurance of up to 3 hours.
Founded in 2015, Quantum Systems is currently developing a range of systems that will be introduced to the market in 2024 and 2025. This strategy will offer customers a seamless layered approach in terms of range, flight time, and payload capabilities, with both smaller and larger platforms available.
To complete the research endeavor, the Planning Office of the German Armed Forces has also engaged Spleenlab GmbH, which specializes in AI edge software for swarming. Spleenlab will contribute its expertise in object recognition and robust navigation methods in communication-denied environments, benefiting additional programs and small unmanned aircraft vehicles.
This collaboration is part of the joint Main Ground Combat Systems (MGCS) program between France and Germany. Launched in 2018, the program aims to enhance the defensive and offensive capabilities of main battle tanks on the battlefield by integrating next-generation technology and multiple platforms.
Additionally, in the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program, France, Germany, and Spain are collaborating on the development of a system consisting of manned new generation fighters, unmanned aircraft, and new weapons and communications systems.
The research partnership between Quantum Systems, Airbus Defence and Space, and Spleenlab paves the way for advancements in AI and swarming capabilities for tactical UAS. The collaboration and expertise brought forth by each company will contribute to the effectiveness and innovation of tactical UAS, ultimately benefiting the armed forces.
