The government of Punjab in India has cleared 9,030 acres of government land from encroachments, mainly by influential farmers. To intensify the drive, the Rural Development and Panchayats Minister, Laljit Singh Bhullar, has instructed officials to identify and submit reports on illegally encroached upon big land chunks. Last year’s drive alone cleared government land with an average market value of around Rs 2,709 crores. The minister’s focus now is to make the MGNREGA scheme more transparent and add more eligible beneficiaries under it. The chief minister has reiterated the government’s commitment to free land from illegal encroachments. Influential people who violated the rules and encroached on expensive government lands will not be spared. The department’s success in clearing encroached areas shows the government’s determination to claim its lands back and bring justice to those who have illegally profited from it.
