Mexico Open at Vidanta 2024 brings PGA golf to Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta is gearing up for the Mexico Open, a PGA Tour event that will be played on the Vidanta Vallarta Course from Feb. 22 to 25. The tournament will feature a purse of US $8.1 million, with the winner receiving 500 FedEx Cup points and a top prize of $1.5 million. The Mexico Open is known for providing opportunities to Latin American players, and since its inception in 2022, it has seen the participation of 31 golfers from the region, including six amateurs. This year’s tournament will feature at least eight Mexican golfers, including Rodolfo Cazaubón and Sebastián Vázquez. Although none of them have PGA Tour wins to their name, Cazaubón has won four PGA Tour Latinoamérica events and was named the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year in 2015. Vázquez, the Mexican Amateur Champion in 2011 and 2012, expressed his hopes of a breakthrough performance in this year’s Mexico Open.
The reigning champion of the Mexico Open is American Tony Finau, who secured victory with stellar performances in each round. In the 2022 event, Spanish golfer Jon Rahm outplayed Finau by one stroke to claim the title. Rahm, a two-time major champion, has recently joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour.
The Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta resort, host of the Mexico Open, offers a challenging par 71 course designed by golfing legend Greg Norman.
