Due to heavy rainfall in Puducherry, all private and government schools have been shut today, according to the education minister, A Namachivayam. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ for extremely heavy rainfall in Puducherry, Karaikal, and Tamil Nadu. The weather agency has also predicted heavy rainfall in over 10 districts of Tamil Nadu for the next two days.

With an impending weather change, more than 10 districts in Tamil Nadu are expected to receive heavy rain intermittently. The IMD’s post on X states, Orange Alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal! Prepare for heavy to very heavy rainfall on November 22nd and 23rd.

Today, heavy rain has already lashed several areas of Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, while parts of Coimbatore experienced downpours on Tuesday night. As a result, schools will remain closed in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Dindigul, and Madurai. This closure follows the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to declare a holiday for educational institutions in Mayiladuthurai District on November 14 due to the prediction of heavy rainfall by the IMD.

The heavy rains have led to waterlogging in various areas of Tamil Nadu, including Tiruvannamalai and Erode. Rainwater has mixed with drain water, causing houses to be inundated. In response to the situation, State Minister of Housing and Urban Development, S Muthusamy, along with district administration officials, has inspected the affected areas and assured residents that measures will be taken to build stronger banks on the ponds.

Southern India experiences heavy rainfall during the northeast monsoons, also known as the winter monsoon. Occurring between October and December, the northeast monsoon is a smaller-scale version of the southwest monsoon, primarily affecting the southern peninsula.

As schools remain closed due to the heavy rainfall in Puducherry and other districts of Tamil Nadu, authorities are urging residents and students to take necessary precautions and stay safe during this period of inclement weather.
