Using social media data and artificial intelligence, a recent study conducted by the University of Michigan has found that approximately 15% of Americans deny the existence of climate change. The study utilized Twitter data from 2017 to 2019 to analyze how climate change denialism has been spread through social media. It also identified influential figures, such as former President Donald Trump, who have played a significant role in disseminating misinformation about climate change.

The research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, revealed that climate change denial is most prevalent in the central and southern regions of the United States, with states like Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, and North Dakota having over 20% of their population denying climate change. On the other hand, belief in climate change is highest along the West Coast and East Coast.

Political affiliation was shown to be a major factor in determining climate change beliefs, with a high percentage of Republican voters being correlated with climate change denial. The study also found that there is a strong connection between climate denialism and low COVID-19 vaccination rates, suggesting a broader skepticism of science.

The study not only highlighted the prevalence of climate change denial but also identified the key influencers in spreading misinformation. Former President Donald Trump was found to be the most influential figure, with conservative media outlets such as The Daily Wire, Breitbart, and Climate Depot contributing significantly to the spread of climate change denial.

Dr. Joshua Newell, the senior author of the study, emphasized the division between climate change belief and denial on social media platforms. He noted that individuals tend to selectively credit or discredit evidence based on their beliefs, leading to the formation of echo chambers that hinder meaningful communication between the two groups.

In light of these findings, the researchers recommended that social media companies take steps to flag and address misinformation related to climate change. They also suggested the implementation of policies to limit the spread of climate change denial, similar to the actions taken by platforms such as Twitter in response to other types of false information.

The study sheds light on the significant influence that social media platforms and public figures have in shaping public opinion on climate change. As the issue of climate change continues to be a pressing global concern, addressing the spread of misinformation is crucial to promote informed decision-making and action to mitigate its effects.
