Thousands of demonstrators gathered in London on Sunday to march against antisemitism in response to a surge in hate crimes against Jews following the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas. Carrying placards expressing solidarity with British Jews and demanding zero tolerance for antisemitism, the protestors also held up images of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Reports of antisemitic offenses skyrocketed to 554 between October 1 and November 1, compared to just 44 during the same period last year. In a similar vein, Islamophobic offenses nearly tripled to 220. The rally took place a day after pro-Palestinian protestors called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, with an estimated 45,000 participants.
During Sunday’s demonstration, far-right activist Tommy Robinson was arrested after refusing to leave the area as requested by the police. The organizers had specifically asked Robinson not to attend due to concerns over his potential to cause distress. It remains unclear how many people participated in Sunday’s march. The events aim to draw attention to the rise of hate crimes against the Jewish community in the face of recent tensions in the Middle East.
