Protesters Demand Release of Arrested Youths, Clash with Security Forces in Imphal

At least 10 people were injured in Imphal as security forces clashed with protesters demanding the release of five arrested youths. The incident occurred when a mob of demonstrators attempted to storm police stations, demanding the unconditional release of the village volunteers who had been taken into custody.

As a precautionary measure, the state government cancelled curfew relaxations in the twin districts of Imphal. The decision came after hundreds of protesters, holding placards and shouting slogans, tried to enter various police stations in Imphal East and Imphal West districts. The police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel responded by firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

The protesters argue that the five village volunteers play an essential role in safeguarding Meitei villages in the periphery of the hills and the valley against Kuki Zo militants. They claim that their demand for the volunteers’ release stems from the government’s failure to take action.

This agitation, known as the voluntary mass arrest, was launched by the All Langthabal Kendra United Clubs Coordinating Committee. Their decision was prompted by the lack of progress in securing the release of the arrested youths. The individuals in question were detained for possessing sophisticated weapons and wearing camouflage uniforms.

In response to the violence, the state government reinstated the curfew restriction in both districts of Imphal. The district magistrate issued an order stating that the curfew hours, originally relaxed from 5 am to 9 pm, were to be withdrawn from 5 pm. The movement of the general public outside their residences was prohibited in all areas of Imphal West district. Similar measures were also implemented in Imphal East district.

The clashes have fuelled tensions in Manipur, with reports indicating the reemergence of dormant terror groups. The situation remains volatile as authorities work to maintain peace and security in the region.
