Russell Domingo, the former Proteas coach, has been appointed as the new head coach of Central Gauteng Lions on a three-year contract starting from 1st July. Domingo began his coaching career in 2004 with the SA U19 team and then became the head coach of the Warriors in 2005. Under his leadership, the franchise managed to secure domestic one-day and T20 victories in the 2009-10 season.
Domingo was appointed as Proteas’ T20I coach in December 2012 and later became Proteas head coach in all formats in May 2013. He held this position until August 2017, following which he coached Bangladesh for three seasons and worked with the Netherlands more recently.
In a statement, Domingo expressed his gratitude at the opportunity to be a part of the Lions Cricket setup. He is eager to get started, meet the players and entrench himself amongst this passionate family. I am thrilled to be back in the South African cricketing landscape and know that I’ll feel at home, he added.
This appointment comes as a homecoming for Domingo, who is excited to be a part of the successful setup of Lions Cricket. It will be interesting to see how he brings his experience of coaching various teams to the Central Gauteng Lions. With his appointment, the Lions Cricket Club looks to achieve new heights of success in the future.
