Title: Promoting Social Inclusion for Physically Challenged Individuals

In life, we all face challenges and unforeseen circumstances, as mentioned in the Bible book of Ecclesiastes Chapter 9:11b. This concept of time and chance encompasses accidents, natural disasters, and other circumstances that can shape our lives. For physically challenged individuals, these challenges manifest in various forms such as blindness, lameness, hearing impairments, and amputations resulting from accidents. It is important to recognize that individuals with disabilities are not suffering from sickness or the result of their parents’ sins; they are not mentally ill or emotionally unstable. They are capable individuals who, with the right support and opportunities, can thrive and contribute to society.

Society is composed of individuals with diverse abilities, and physical disabilities are a part of that diversity. Countless successful individuals with disabilities have made significant contributions in various fields, including music, law, journalism, sports, secretarial administration, teaching, lecturing, politics, sports, architecture, and catering. A civilized society takes intentional steps to accommodate the physically challenged and the less privileged, providing them with opportunities to live up to their potential.

Recognizing the rights and privileges of people living with disabilities is a crucial aspect of creating an inclusive society. The United Nations, through its convention on the Rights of People Living with Disabilities, emphasizes that individuals with disabilities have fundamental human rights, including freedom of association and employment without discrimination. Likewise, the Rivers State Disability Welfare Enhancement Law No.13 of 201l seeks to address the challenges faced by persons living with disabilities. However, it is vital to establish a commission or board to effectively implement the provisions of this law.

As a nation, Nigeria’s care for its citizens, especially those with disabilities, leaves much to be desired. Public buildings, including schools, churches, mosques, parks, and restrooms, often lack facilities designed to enhance the comfort and accessibility of individuals with disabilities. Moreover, the Ministry of Social Welfare rarely comprises individuals with disabilities, and appointments of special assistants, commissioners, and ministers often overlook this marginalized group. This exclusion extends to daily encounters, such as fixing classes, tests, or examinations on higher floors when the ground floor could be utilized to accommodate physically challenged individuals.

Incidents like a police officer harassing a strabismus patient wearing dark eye glasses or admonishing a lame or crippled driver without empathy and understanding reveal the need for greater awareness and societal change. Nigeria must prioritize the welfare of physically challenged individuals, distinguishing their challenges from sickness, illness, or the less privileged. Emotionally stable individuals should not be stigmatized due to physical disabilities.

Leaders in positions of trust must set an example by appointing individuals with disabilities into significant roles. Adequate budgetary provisions should be made for people with disabilities, surpassing mere birthday celebrations with photo opportunities. We commend the recent initiative of the government of Akwa Ibom State, which allocated One Hundred Million Naira to improve the well-being of people living with disabilities. Collaboration with organizations and individuals offering free or subsidized prosthetic limbs can also provide relief to affected individuals.

Governments, religious organizations, and individuals should prioritize inclusivity in the construction of buildings, roads, bridges, and public places. States and national assemblies must enact laws that instill hope in people living with disabilities and promote good governance. Employers of labor should recognize the value and skills that persons with disabilities possess and offer suitable employment opportunities.

The time to act is now. Let us create a society that makes a conscious effort to include individuals with disabilities, recognizing their inherent worth and embracing their contributions. Together, we can build an egalitarian society that promotes social inclusion and empowers all of its citizens.
