Project SY12 CIC Transforms Ellesmere Market Hall into Thriving Community Hub

A new chapter is unfolding at Ellesmere Market Hall as Project SY12 Community Interest Company (CIC) takes the reins and sets out to revitalize the historic building. Their vision is to create a vibrant community hub where local traders can start or expand their businesses, fostering economic growth and enhancing the town’s social fabric.

In March, the CIC assumed the lease of Ellesmere Market Hall from Shropshire Council, marking the beginning of their ambitious plans. Since then, they have wasted no time in breathing new life into the space. In addition to the traditional Tuesday town market, they have introduced regular late-night and artisan markets, drawing visitors from near and far.

Alexander-James Hunter, a member of the CIC, explained their motivation: We saw the untapped potential of the hall and recognized the need to transform it into a more functional and inviting space. Our primary focus is on fulfilling the charter requirements for the Tuesday market, but we also aim to host private hire events and provide a venue that serves the broader community.

Months of preparation have culminated in a comprehensive refurbishment plan, encompassing the renovation of toilets, floors, and the general interior. Leveraging their expertise from their events company, the CIC is determined to create an atmosphere that appeals to both traders and visitors alike.

The success of the inaugural late-night market in July has further energized the CIC. With a fantastic turnout and a diverse range of local vendors, the event proved that there is an appetite for unique shopping experiences in the community. Building on this momentum, the CIC has announced the introduction of a Thursday market from September, complementing the existing Tuesday market. Additionally, they will be launching a monthly artisan market, bringing together a curated collection of home decor, health and beauty, food and drink, crafts, and clothing vendors.

Looking ahead, Project SY12 is already planning for the winter and next summer. Their calendar for next year will feature the return and management of the popular Food & Drink Festival in June, the three-day Summer Festival in August, and ongoing involvement in the town’s winter festival for 2023 and 2024.

To ensure the CIC’s success, a diverse and knowledgeable board of directors has been assembled. Comprised of individuals with previous market or town event experience, they bring unique perspectives and expertise to the table. Hunter emphasized the importance of funding to develop the market hall into a true community hub. The CIC plans to open up bidding to local companies through their website while pursuing additional funding opportunities.

The CIC warmly welcomes both new and established traders to join their market and events. They encourage aspiring entrepreneurs with business ideas to engage with them, with the possibility of becoming incubators for small start-ups that could eventually transition to units in the town center or business park.

The transformation of Ellesmere Market Hall under the guidance of Project SY12 CIC promises to be a game-changer for the community. With a renewed sense of purpose, this historic building is set to become a bustling hub of commerce and connection, supporting local businesses and nurturing a sense of community pride. As plans are set in motion and refurbishment gets underway, excitement is building, and Ellesmere anticipates a bright future ahead.
