Progressive Movement Works to Safeguard Achievements Amid Growing Right-Wing Threat

As the progressive movement continues to make strides in promoting a more inclusive and equitable society, it faces an increasingly formidable challenge from right-wing forces seeking to undermine its progress. After three successful election cycles that brought a wave of progressive lawmakers to Congress, the movement now finds itself in a precarious position, with the looming threat of a Republican-controlled presidency and Congress in 2024.

In order to create meaningful change in the next four years, it is vital for Democrats to regain control of the House, retain the Senate, and maintain the White House. The battle, however, extends beyond Republicans. Right-wing forces are determined to exert influence over the Democratic Party as well, funneling millions of dollars to elect corporate Democrats who will serve the interests of the billionaire class. These same forces pose a threat to Democrats’ chances of regaining a congressional majority, while also bankrolling right-wing Supreme Court justices who could jeopardize issues such as reproductive freedom, student debt forgiveness, and affirmative action.

It is alarming that right-wing organizations like AIPAC, which receive funding from GOP megadonors, are targeting progressive lawmakers of color. AIPAC has endorsed over 100 Republicans who voted against President Biden’s election results and are associated with the January 6, 2021 insurrection. Despite attempting to obscure their ties to Republican donor networks, AIPAC and its GOP allies are preparing to spend tens of millions of dollars to dismantle the progress made by the progressive movement over the past five years.

The success of the progressive movement can be measured through election victories, bill passages, votes, and progress in the party’s platform. Though a small group of representatives in Congress have been instrumental in driving this success, they cannot transform the political system alone. It requires collaboration with various groups such as the labor movement, young activists, and grassroots organizations like the Sunrise Movement, the Democratic Socialists of America, and the Working Families Party. Together, they mobilize communities, hold elected leaders accountable, and strive for justice in areas such as climate change, economic and racial equality, abortion rights, foreign policy, gun violence, disability justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigration reform, benefiting poor and working families.

Representatives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush, and Rashida Tlaib have opened doors and shown what can be achieved in Congress. Whether it’s advocating for a Green New Deal, fighting for the vulnerable, or challenging foreign policy norms, their voices are crucial in amplifying the demands of the people. However, to enact real change, it is necessary to protect the progressive incumbents who have worked tirelessly to bring about transformation.

The progressive movement acknowledges that this fight is long-term, and efforts are underway to broaden and strengthen a cohesive bloc of progressive members in Congress who can drive legislative change for the party. With continued protection and support, expanding the ranks of unwavering progressives to 20 or 30 members in Congress is within reach.

In order to safeguard the progress achieved thus far, it is crucial to remain vigilant and allocate substantial resources to protect the movement’s infrastructure. The right-wing opposition is counting on the underestimation of their deep pockets and power. By recognizing the challenges ahead and providing unwavering support, the progressive movement can continue to build upon its achievements and create a future that serves the interests of all.
