Pro-Palestinian March Erupts in London Amid Escalating Violence in Gaza
Thousands of pro-Palestinian activists took to the streets of London on Saturday to express their solidarity with the people of Gaza as violence in the region intensified. The march, which saw scuffles and clashes near Downing Street, attracted a significant number of participants, including trade unionists and left-wing MPs.
The demonstration, organized by pro-Palestine groups, aimed to raise awareness about the dire situation in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further civilian casualties. Amidst calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn condemned the UK’s decision to abstain from a UN motion for a truce, labeling it an eternal stain. Corbyn emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire, particularly when innocent children are losing their lives due to weapons entering their homes.
While UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly acknowledged the necessity of supporting the Palestinian people, he maintained that Hamas had given no indication of abiding by any ceasefire agreement. Alicia Kearns, chair of Parliament’s foreign affairs committee, called for a temporary humanitarian truce, acknowledging the challenges of reaching a comprehensive ceasefire agreement between the two sides.
The protest organizers in London stressed the importance of making the event even more substantial than the previous pro-Palestine rally in Britain, which garnered significant attention. However, the Metropolitan Police utilized public order powers to restrict protesters from gathering near the Israeli embassy.
In response to concerns raised about potential acts of incitement, Met commander Kyle Gordon asserted that the police force would ensure the events were policed according to the law. He also emphasized the utilization of all relevant legislation by experienced officers.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a prominent advocate for a ceasefire in Gaza, pledged to tackle hate during the rally, with the police force fully committed to addressing racism, intimidation, and harassment. However, the UK government rejected calls for stricter laws, stating that existing powers granted to the police were sufficient to curb violence and racial hatred.
The question of a ceasefire has become a divisive issue in UK politics. Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf has called for Britain’s support for a truce, expressing personal concerns about his family in Gaza. He has written to party leaders, urging them to endorse a ceasefire. Meanwhile, supporters of both Israel and Palestine continue to escalate their campaigns amid growing tension.
As calls for peace reverberate, children symbolically placed teddy bears outside the Foreign Office in London to draw attention to the suffering of young Gazans caught in the crossfire. Additionally, a separate action involved setting 220 empty seats at a Shabbat table in north London to honor hostages held captive by Hamas following their attack on Israel.
The UK government, led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, abstained from a UN vote on a humanitarian truce, citing the failure to explicitly condemn Hamas by name in the resolution. Foreign Secretary Cleverly reiterated the absence of any signs from Hamas indicating their compliance with calls for a ceasefire.
