A pro hockey player from Northern Ireland has defied the odds and shown incredible resilience after discovering a brain tumour the size of three golf balls. Matthew Bell, hailing from Craigavon in Co Armagh, was at the height of his career in 2016, preparing for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Little did he know that his life was about to take a drastic turn.

Three years later, Matthew began experiencing vomiting and migraines, and his performance in hockey began to decline. As a result, his new club signing in Belgium sent him back to his previous German club, unknowingly saving his life.

In September 2019, an MRI scan revealed that Matthew had a brain tumour located in his midbrain, which was as large as three golf balls. Urgent surgery was required to prevent a fatal brain haemorrhage.

Matthew spent six weeks in a hospital in Germany, undergoing five surgeries. He was then flown back to Belfast via air ambulance to begin cancer treatment. During his time away from home, he lost the ability to eat, talk, and walk for seven weeks. Neurologists were uncertain if he would ever regain these abilities.

However, exactly one year after his diagnosis, Matthew defied the odds and ran unaided for the first time. His resilience and determination were evident as he shed tears of joy during this remarkable achievement.

Matthew credits his positive mindset to his supportive parents and family, as well as his background as a professional international hockey player. Although many see him as an inspiration, Matthew humbly believes his positive mental attitude stems from his elite sportsperson mentality.

Throughout his journey, Matthew received chemotherapy and radiotherapy at Belfast City Hospital. He worked closely with various therapists to regain his physical abilities and return to the hockey pitch.

Despite facing significant challenges, Matthew remains hopeful and focused on his future. He played a full season for the 3XI last year and helped his team achieve promotion. In the coming year, he plans to continue playing hockey, working diligently to improve his skills. Additionally, he will take on a coaching role, passing on his experience and knowledge to younger club members.

In a testament to his remarkable journey, Matthew has released a memoir titled ‘Second Chances,’ chronicling his story of resilience, strength, and determination. Although he has faced arduous trials, his unwavering positive attitude has guided him through the darkest times.

Matthew’s story serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of maintaining a positive mindset in overcoming life’s obstacles. His journey is an inspiration to all, demonstrating that with determination and unwavering positivity, one can conquer the most daunting challenges.
