Ruth Edwards Back on the Chain Gang: ‘I Think I Can Be Even Better’

ADELAIDE, Australia – Ruth Edwards, the seasoned professional cyclist, has made a remarkable return to the peloton at the Santos Tour Down Under following a two-year break from racing. Edwards, now 30, has joined the Human Powered Health team and is eager to resume her competitive career.

After her self-imposed exile in 2021, Edwards took the time to reflect and re-energize herself. She realized that she missed the training, suffering, and racing that come with the life of a professional cyclist. Having closely followed the sport during her hiatus, Edwards is more motivated than ever to compete with the best in all the major races.

I just missed it, Edwards admitted. I was racing gravel, but it wasn’t the same as road racing. I felt rejuvenated and knew I still had more to offer. I had the motivation to train and push myself. Back in 2021, I didn’t have that same drive. I just needed a break and some rest.

Now equipped in her new Human Powered Health kit, Edwards is ready to dust off any cobwebs and tackle the race she previously won in 2020. While she anticipates mental challenges and fatigue after her two-year hiatus, she remains confident in her ability to seamlessly reintegrate into the competitive field. With 15 years of racing experience, Edwards is no stranger to the pace of the peloton.

During her time away, Edwards ventured into the thriving gravel scene in the United States before realizing her true passion lies in road racing. She became an avid spectator of women’s cycling, closely following the races and even analyzing them through her podcast. Eventually, she began entertaining the thought of returning to the peloton, believing she still had what it takes to compete.

I watched more women’s bike racing in the past two years than throughout my entire career. As an active rider, you don’t have much time to watch, Edwards explained. But I began thinking, ‘Could I be there? Could I make that split?’ Maybe not in 2022, but last year, I felt it.

With plenty of time left in her cycling journey, Edwards is determined to reclaim her position at the top of the sport. She harbors dreams of standing on podiums and showcasing her capabilities in various races.

While the prospect of participating in the Tour de France Femmes and potentially earning a spot on the U.S. women’s team for the Paris Olympic Games excites her, Edwards emphasizes that her main focus is on having a complete and successful season.

Resuming her career with the Human Powered Health team after five years with Trek, Edwards felt an instant connection and enthusiasm within the team. Their eagerness and warm welcome played a significant role in her decision.

Following the Santos Tour Down Under, Edwards will head to Europe to compete in races in Spain before tackling the spring classics, including Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Strade Bianche, and the northern classics. She eagerly anticipates testing her skills against formidable opponents, particularly SD Worx and Demi Vollering, whom she defeated in a photo finish in the 2021 Brabantse Pijl.

Edwards is resolute in her return to professional cycling, aiming not just to enjoy the ride but to secure podium finishes and make her mark on the sport once again.

In a bold comeback, Ruth Edwards is determined to prove that she can achieve even greater heights in cycling. With renewed motivation and an unwavering spirit, she is ready to face the challenges and redefine her place in the peloton.
