Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has expressed concerns over the ongoing situation in Manipur, alleging that the central government has not taken immediate measures to restore peace in the area and ensure the safety of its people. Nine people were killed and ten others were injured in the state in fresh violence on Wednesday, with ethnic violence having erupted last month.
In a tweet, Priyanka Gandhi said that the situation in Manipur is very distressing, and it is deeply disheartening to see that the central government is not taking immediate measures to ensure the safety of the people of Manipur and the restoration of peace.
The Manipur government has extended the ban on internet services in the state until June 15th due to the ongoing situation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Manipur for four days from May 29th and announced several measures to restore peace to the state. He held meetings with Chief Minister N Biren Singh, as well as leaders of various political parties, civil society, women and tribal groups, and senior officials.
Shah announced that a peace committee would be formed within the state. The state has seen violence since early May, following clashes during a rally organised by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) against the demand for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category. The Manipur High Court had asked the state government to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (STs) list.
The situation in Manipur is a cause for concern, and swift action must be taken to restore peace and ensure the safety and security of its people. The central government has a responsibility to act quickly and appropriately to resolve the ongoing issues in the state.
