Nearly every presidential center has come together in a historic move to release a joint statement emphasizing the importance of democracy and urging civil discourse. This is the first known instance of presidential foundations and centers uniting to protect democracy.

The statement highlights how vital it is for Americans to support democratic movements and human rights worldwide. It acknowledges that free societies in other parts of the world contribute to the security and prosperity of the United States. However, our global standing is undermined when others see our nation in disarray. Recognizing this, the joint statement emphasizes the need for the United States to strive towards a more perfect union and provide leadership to those abroad who seek it.

Notably, former President Donald Trump, who does not yet have a presidential center, did not sign the statement. This release comes at a time when investigations are focused on Trump’s efforts to prevent a peaceful transition of power. CNN has reached out to Trump’s presidential campaign for a response.

The joint statement asserts that democracy is what brings us together and allows for a wide range of perspectives, as long as they are rooted in democratic principles. It highlights the responsibilities of elected officials to lead by example and effectively govern for the American people. Restoring trust in public service is crucial, and it requires engagement in civil dialogue, respect for democratic institutions and rights, support for safe and accessible elections, as well as contributing to local, state, or national improvement from all citizens.

This call from the presidential foundations comes at a time when Americans are expressing pessimism and a lack of faith in democracy. According to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS in July, President Joe Biden’s approval rating for protecting democracy dipped into negative territory. The survey found that 44% approve and 55% disapprove, with the shift occurring fairly evenly across party lines.

Adding to the concerns, among Republicans, the percentage of those who believe Biden’s 2020 election win was not legitimate has risen to 69%, up from 63% earlier this year.

Several prominent foundations have signed the joint statement, including the Obama Foundation, George W. Bush Presidential Center, Clinton Foundation, George & Barbara Bush Foundation, The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, The Carter Center, Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, Richard Nixon Foundation, LBJ Foundation, John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, Truman Library Institute, Roosevelt Institute, and Hoover Presidential Foundation.

It is worth noting that the Eisenhower Foundation declined to sign, stating that they had not collectively discussed the statement and had only received an invitation to sign it.

The joint release of this statement by the presidential centers is a significant step towards protecting and promoting democracy in America. By coming together, these foundations aim to address the challenges facing democracy and inspire Americans to engage in civil discourse, respect democratic institutions, and contribute to the improvement of our country. It is an important reminder that democracy is not just a political system but a shared responsibility for all citizens.
