US President Joe Biden is set to deliver his annual State of the Union speech to Congress on March 7, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who extended the invitation on Saturday. This will also be Johnson’s first address as Speaker, and it comes at a crucial time for the 2024 primaries, just two days after Super Tuesday when many states hold their primary elections.
In his invitation to the President, Johnson emphasized the importance of the moment and the President’s constitutional duty to report on the state of the union. President Biden accepted the invitation, expressing his anticipation for the event.
The State of the Union speech will provide Biden with an opportunity to outline his vision for the country to a closely divided Congress. The President is expected to discuss various pressing issues, including climate change, prescription drug costs, taxes, and other elements of his agenda. Biden aims to finish the job on these matters, having already achieved milestones such as the Inflation Reduction Act, which tackles healthcare and climate control.
However, the President may face opposition from some lawmakers who have criticized his job performance. Certain House Democrats have voiced their disapproval of the President’s decision to continue providing military assistance to Israel during its conflict with Hamas. Additionally, Biden has encountered dissatisfaction among young voters in Black and Hispanic communities, who are disappointed with his response to the Israel-Gaza conflict. They have even expressed the likelihood of voting for a third-party candidate.
The State of the Union address also coincides with critical deadlines for Congress to fund the government. The first batch of appropriations bills expires on January 19, requiring Congress to pass key bills related to agriculture, military construction, veterans affairs, transportation, housing, urban development, energy, and water by then. The remaining appropriations bills need to be resolved by February 2.
