Cessna 210L Incident in Groote Eylandt Leaves 4 Passengers Seriously Injured
An incident involving a Cessna 210L charter aircraft on Groote Eylandt, in the Northern Territory, has resulted in serious injuries to four passengers, according to a preliminary report released by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB). On June 16, the piston-engined Cessna 210L encountered issues shortly after takeoff from Groote Eylandt Airport. The pilot noticed fuel flow fluctuations and engine surging, prompting a decision to return to the airport. The pilot communicated this intention over the common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF) before maneuvering the aircraft back towards the runway.
During the descent, the aircraft deviated from its intended path and passed diagonally over the eastern end of the runway, continuing parallel to it. At an altitude of approximately 100 feet, it crossed the western threshold of the runway. Subsequently, the aircraft touched down on a clear grassed area about 500 meters beyond the runway’s end.
The preliminary report states that the aircraft traveled along the ground for approximately 120 meters, reaching a recorded groundspeed of 87-62 knots. After encountering an embankment on one side of a culvert, the aircraft flipped over and came to rest, inverted, on a mine service road.
Out of the five passengers on board, four sustained serious injuries, while the pilot and the remaining passenger suffered minor injuries. The ATSB investigators examined the wreckage and accident site, collecting components for further examination. Interviews were conducted with relevant parties and pertinent documentation from the aircraft, pilot, and operator was obtained.
Engine data management system information, video recordings, and recorded flight data were also analyzed by the ATSB. The investigation will continue with a comprehensive review of the recovered aircraft components, airport documentation, and the runway’s safety area at Groote Eylandt Airport.
A final report, including a detailed analysis of the ATSB’s findings, will be released upon the conclusion of the investigation. If any critical safety issues are identified during the investigation, the ATSB will promptly notify relevant parties to ensure appropriate and timely safety measures are taken.
