NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Nashville drivers are facing a costly problem as massive potholes continue to plague the roads. The recent wet and rainy weather has made the situation even worse, creating hazardous conditions for motorists.

One such driver, Derrick Polk, had a firsthand experience with the damaging impact of a pothole. While driving on Wednesday, he hit a deep pothole on I-24 at Haywood Lane, which resulted in a blown-out tire. Polk was not alone in his struggle, as a TDOT traffic camera captured several other drivers abruptly braking or swerving to avoid the pothole.

TDOT (Tennessee Department of Transportation) swiftly responded to Polk’s predicament, assisting him in changing his tire and promptly patching the pothole. However, due to the persistent rain, the patch may not hold up for long. TDOT is working diligently to make driving smoother for Nashville residents, but tackling the pothole problem will take time.

Meanwhile, Polk hopes to be reimbursed for the damages he incurred. His vehicle suffered significant suspension damage, with an estimated cost of $900 to repair the rim and tire. He intends to file a claim with the state, requesting compensation.

TDOT has established a process for drivers who encounter pothole-related vehicle damage. Claims are thoroughly investigated by the Tennessee Department of Treasury on a case-by-case basis. Examiners consider various factors, including the circumstances of the incident, the specific pothole location, prior notifications to TDOT regarding the issue, and the reasonable amount of time given to repair the pothole.

Claimants must provide evidence to support their claim, such as documentation of the incident and subsequent repairs, exact location details, and proof that TDOT was aware of the dangerous road condition before the incident occurred. They must also demonstrate that the state had ample opportunity to repair the hazardous road condition but neglected to do so.

To ensure the safety and well-being of all drivers, it is crucial to report potholes promptly. Residents of Metro Nashville can report potholes through the appropriate channels.

As Nashville continues to grapple with the aftermath of heavy rain and deteriorating road conditions, drivers must exercise caution and report any hazards they encounter. TDOT remains committed to addressing and repairing potholes to enhance the driving experience for all residents.
