Police Support vs. Criminal Sympathy: Brazil’s Battle for Public Safety

In Brazil, leaders are grappling with a crucial choice that will shape the country’s future. They must decide whether to stand with society against crime, supporting the police, or align themselves with criminals, opposing law enforcement. The consequences of this decision are far-reaching and will greatly impact the population’s safety and well-being.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a sea of hesitation surrounding this dilemma. Some individuals hesitate due to their inherent good nature, believing that even criminals are entitled to justice. However, the majority of these hesitations stem from dishonesty, hypocrisy, and the willful blindness of those who place blame solely on the police.

The recent murder of Officer Patrick Bastos Reis in Guarujá illustrates the harmful tendency of the left to demonize the police. The left’s support for the misguided belief that serious crimes are merely social issues and that criminals are victims of the economic situation reflects their self-destructive obsession. Officer Reis was brutally killed in his patrol car, shot from a distance without any confrontation. The murderer turned himself in and is now in the hands of the justice system.

But what more do they want? Had the police remained passive, the government, the bishop’s union, and organizations like the Brazilian Bar Association would not have uttered a word. Unfortunately, a policeman’s life seems to hold little value when it comes to furthering progressive agendas.

However, the police took action. They pursued the accomplices and masterminds behind the crime. In the face of gunfire, they killed seven criminals with previous records and arrested others. Yet, the Minister of Justice suspects the police’s actions were disproportionate, and the Minister of Human Rights expresses concern. The media even portrays the police’s operations as reprisals against the population, completely disregarding the fight against crime.

This depiction perfectly captures the current state of Brazil. The government, led by Lula, aims to close shooting clubs, giving criminals free rein while undermining public safety. They advocate for long prison sentences for those who threaten politicians but push for the early release of convicted criminals. The São Paulo police, who bravely confront crime daily, face opposition from the government, leaving the people to question their safety.

It is essential to remember that public safety cannot be achieved while constantly opposing police actions. Like numbers, it is either even or odd; there is no in-between. The choice is clear: stand with the society against crime or side with criminals and undermine law enforcement.

Brazil’s leaders must prioritize the safety and well-being of their citizens. They have the opportunity to earn the respect and acclaim of a population increasingly besieged by rampant criminality. The path they choose will shape the future of Brazil and determine whether the country can overcome this tug of war between police support and criminal sympathy.
