Metro Police Officer Convicted of Harassment Dismissed and Banned from Victim Contact

In a recent development, a police officer from the United Kingdom’s London Metropolitan Police has been dismissed and prohibited from contacting his victim after being convicted of harassment. Trainee Detective Constable Christopher Gibbons, aged 32, attached to the Met’s Central West Command, was found guilty of harassment following a trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

During his sentencing on Thursday, 10 August, DC Gibbons received a suspended custody sentence of ten weeks, valid for two years. The court also imposed a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and ordered the officer to pay the victim £500 in compensation. Additionally, a restraining order was issued, preventing any further contact between the officer and the victim.

An accelerated misconduct hearing took place on 12 October 2023, where it was found that DC Gibbons had breached the standards of professional behavior concerning discreditable conduct. Consequently, he was dismissed from his position without notice by the disciplinary board.

Chief Superintendent Louise Puddefoot, who supervises policing in Central West BCU, emphasized the commitment of the London Metropolitan Police to hold its officers accountable for their actions. She stated, We have been clear that any police officer or member of staff who commits a criminal offense will be brought to justice. To give London the Met that it deserves, any officer who acts in this manner simply has no place in our organization.

As a result of his dismissal, former PC Gibbons will be included in the Barred List maintained by the College of Policing. Individuals on this list are ineligible for employment by the police, local policing bodies, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, or Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.

This incident serves as another example of the London Metropolitan Police’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability within their ranks. It reinforces the message that no one, regardless of their position, is above the law, and any wrongdoing will be met with severe consequences.

As the case concludes, it is a reminder of the importance of maintaining trust and integrity within law enforcement agencies. The London Metropolitan Police demonstrates a no-tolerance approach towards officers who engage in criminal activities or fail to meet the expected standards of behavior. Through such actions, the force aims to ensure that London receives the policing it deserves—a fair, just, and trustworthy service from its officers.
