The Uttar Pradesh Police and Meta Company, Facebook’s parent company, teamed up to prevent an 18-year-old student from committing suicide. The student posted a video on Instagram while laying on a railway track in Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh. The youth said he wanted to take his life after fighting with a friend. The State Police headquarters in Lucknow received an alert email and call from Meta Company’s social media center about the student’s location, informing the Hamirpur police immediately. Trains in both directions were halted on the tracks, preventing the tragedy. The student was also counselled by the police.
Meta Company is Facebook’s parent company, having recently changed its name from Facebook Inc. The company was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, and others. It provides social media and advertising services to its users, and the company’s goal includes connecting people from different parts of the world by creating new products and technologies.
The 18-year-old student who attempted suicide was saved due to the quick response of the Uttar Pradesh Police and the collaboration with Meta Company. The student may have gone through mental distress that led to the suicide attempt; however, the authorities managed to rescue the youth in time and guide him through the experience. Counselling by the police was also provided to assist him in overcoming the negative emotions and thoughts. It is essential to recognize when someone may be in distress and needs professional help or support, and there is no stigma in reaching out for such assistance.
