Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a review meeting on Monday to assess preparations for Cyclone Biparjoy, which is projected to hit the Kutch region of Gujarat on Thursday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other high-ranking officials attended the meeting. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, indicating that the extremely severe cyclonic storm had quickly intensified and was set to make landfall on June 15, potentially affecting Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in Gujarat, as well as Karachi in Pakistan. The IMD projected that the storm would cross the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi with a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph. Rescue workers were dispatched to densely populated regions and two of India’s largest ports, Mundra and Kandla, which lie in the storm’s path. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) put authorities on high alert, warning that the cyclone could inflict strong winds, torrential rains, and floods in the coastal regions of Sindh province.
