Plans are moving forward in Glendale, Arizona for a tiny home village aimed at providing safe and stable housing for at-risk veterans. The project, which will accommodate 50 veterans, has received the full support of Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, who believes it will not only offer secure housing but also enhance the city’s beauty.
To facilitate the project, city leaders have adopted an interlocal agreement with Maricopa County and will collaborate with the Veterans Community Project, an organization that has successfully established similar villages in other cities. The Veterans Community Project’s approach, which includes wraparound services, has resulted in an 85% positive transition rate from homelessness to permanent housing.
The tiny homes will be accompanied by a range of services to support the residents during their stay. Comprehensive case management services will be available on-site, with an expected residency duration of approximately 18 months.
The location of the village, next to the VFW Post 1433 Sandy Coor, has received the support of post commander Stephen Franklin, who is himself a veteran. Franklin is committed to giving back to fellow veterans and believes the project aligns with the VFW’s core principles.
With an estimated total cost exceeding $15 million, Glendale has contributed $4 million through the provision of the lot, while Maricopa County has allocated $3 million from the American Rescue Plan Funds, and an additional $3 million has been granted by the state. However, an additional $5 million in external funding is still required. Mayor Jerry Weiers remains confident in securing the necessary funds, as potential contributors have already expressed interest.
Construction is scheduled to commence next year as planning continues. The initiative aims to create a supportive community for at-risk veterans by addressing their housing needs and offering the necessary services and resources for a successful transition to permanent homes. Glendale’s commitment to supporting its veterans and providing safe and stable housing showcases the city’s appreciation for those who have bravely served their country.
