Planned outdoor carol services in the Bethnal Green area of east London have been cancelled due to safety concerns after attracting an unexpectedly large crowd of 7,000 people. Last week’s carol singalong at Columbia Road’s Christmas market saw footage on TikTok showing a tightly packed crowd, leading to fears about public safety. As a result, the Tower Hamlets council and police advised the cancellation of additional carol services scheduled for December 13 and 20. The services were organized by St Peter’s Bethnal Green, and the church’s vicar, Rev Heather Atkinson, supported the decision, stating that the event had become dangerously overrun and that no serious injuries were reported. The cancellations aim to prioritize the safety of the community while enabling local businesses to remain open on Wednesday evenings.
