Fireworks Banned During Lunar New Year

The Phnom Penh municipal police and provincial authorities across Cambodia have implemented a ban on the use of fireworks during the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations. The ban aims to ensure public safety and prevent fire-related incidents as people commemorate the Spring Festival, which falls on February 10.

The municipal police in the capital city have directed all district police inspectorates and the general public to exercise caution and remain vigilant against fires. The ban includes a strict prohibition on the use of fireworks, firecrackers, and explosives during the festive season.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of maintaining security, safety, and public order. They have called on individuals, entertainment venues, departments, factories, enterprises, and households to be cautious when dealing with fire-related activities. Lighting candles, incense sticks, joss papers, stoves, and using electricity should be done with utmost care to avoid potential fire hazards. Burning paper offerings must be done using metal buckets or earthen pots and should not be performed on sidewalks or main public roads.

To ensure compliance with the ban, authorities at all levels have been instructed to intensify efforts to prevent the importation of fireworks, firecrackers, and explosives into the capital city. Strict inspections will be conducted, and any prohibited items found will be confiscated.

Any individuals who violate the ban or disturb social peace, security, safety, or public order will face legal consequences as per the prevailing legal framework.

Provincial authorities have also issued similar directives to promote safety during the Lunar New Year celebrations. Authorities at all levels, along with the private sector, NGOs, and the public, are urged to actively promote policies that enhance village and community safety.

Residents are being alerted to the risks of fires, especially with regards to the use of incense sticks, stoves, and electricity. Lighting fireworks and explosives is strictly prohibited. Authorities have advised intensifying regular duties and promptly disseminating information to address any potential traffic congestions or incidents.

Throughout the country, including in Battambang and Koh Kong provinces, local authorities consistently remind the relevant authorities and the general public to prioritize fire prevention. The burning of explosive materials or products that could lead to accidents is strictly prohibited.

The provincial authorities emphasize the need to uphold order, security, and social safety. They urge the implementation of the safe village-community policy to ensure a peaceful celebration.

While the Lunar New Year is not traditionally a Khmer tradition, the Cambodian government respects the cultural practices of citizens of Chinese or Vietnamese descent who observe this festival.

Authorities advise individuals to adhere to their instructions, exercise caution while driving, and obey traffic laws during the upcoming Chinese and Vietnamese New Year celebrations.

In conclusion, the ban on fireworks during the Lunar New Year reflects the Cambodian authorities’ commitment to public safety and the prevention of fire-related incidents. By promoting caution and implementing strict measures, they aim to ensure a peaceful and incident-free celebration for all.
