A philosophy student, Alice Wood, has been found guilty of murder after running over her boyfriend, Ryan Watson, following an argument over party flirting. The incident took place in Rode Heath, Cheshire, after the couple returned home from a charity event. Wood, who was under the influence of alcohol, deliberately drove towards Watson, hitting his car, a bin, and a bollard. Witnesses described her actions as a ‘game of chicken’ as she repeatedly drove her car backwards and forwards. Despite Watson trying to flee, Wood drove into him, causing him to be dragged 500 feet along the road. Wood claimed the argument erupted when they accused each other of flirting with party attendees, but she maintained her boyfriend’s death was a tragic accident. The jury, after eight hours of deliberation, delivered a unanimous verdict of guilty. Wood showed no emotion as the verdict was read. In response, Watson’s family described him as a caring and loving individual and expressed relief that justice had been served. Wood now faces a life sentence, with her minimum term to be determined by the Parole Board.
