Peruvian Dota 2 Gamers Strike Gold at Pan American eSports Games

Gamers from Peru’s male and female Dota 2 teams have emerged victorious at the 2023 Pan American eSports Games in Santiago de Chile. Both teams dominated their categories, securing gold medals in an impressive display of skill and strategy.

In the male category, the Peruvian team clinched the gold medal by defeating Argentina with a commanding score of 3-0. Meanwhile, the women’s team also triumphed over Argentina, emerging victorious with a score of 3-1. Dota 2, a popular real-time strategy video game, is part of the multiplayer online battle arena genre.

The significance of this triumph is not lost on Francis Puppi, the Player Community Manager for the Peruvian Association of Electronic Sports and Video Games (APDEV). In an interview with Peru Reports, Puppi highlighted the importance of this achievement in positioning Peru as a powerhouse in the global eSports scene.

This victory firmly places us as a dominant force in the region, especially in the world of Dota 2. Furthermore, the women’s victory is a significant milestone for inclusion within eSports, Puppi said.

According to the spokesperson, both teams had been training rigorously for some time, ensuring they were well-prepared for the competition. They had previous experience, a deep understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and a cohesive team dynamic.

The Pan American eSports Games took place in Chile from November 2 to 4, running parallel to the 2023 Pan American Games. The event, organized by the Global Esports Federation and Panam Sports, featured not only Dota 2 but also eFootball, each with their respective male and female categories. A total of 120 players from 25 countries across the Americas, including Argentina, Chile, El Salvador, Cuba, and Peru, participated in the competition.

Puppi believes that the PanAm victory opens up an excellent opportunity to change the perception of eSports in Peru, particularly among a more traditional audience that may be unfamiliar with this environment.

We have always had certain paradigms related to electronic sports in our country, and APDEV has been working tirelessly since its foundation to gradually challenge these paradigms, especially by addressing concerns and doubts that parents may have when their children show a strong interest in becoming active participants, Puppi explained.

The growing popularity and potential of eSports are evident in projections made by consulting firm PwC. Its Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2019-2023 report predicts that Peru’s video game market will experience an annual growth rate of 20%, generating a staggering $147 million by 2023. The firm also estimates that the video games market in Latin America as a whole will grow at a rate of 10% annually, reaching $3.59 billion by 2023.

To support the development and professionalization of electronic sports in Peru, APDEV, an NGO dedicated to this cause, recently inaugurated In-Game, the country’s first high-performance center for eSports. This space aims to discover emerging talents and provide support to Peruvian professional players in various game titles, including Dota 2, League of Legends, FIFA, and Counter-Strike.

Although the Dota 2 teams that emerged victorious in the Pan American Games were unable to utilize the facility before the competition due to its unfinished state, the goal is for Peru to have a conducive environment for the growth and success of elite players moving forward.

At present, APDEV is in the final stages of implementing VIP zones in In-Game. These specially designed spaces will provide professional players with top-of-the-line equipment, including Core i9 processors and RTX 4080 graphics cards.

We are thrilled about the positive impact this high-performance center will have on our eSports community and look forward to witnessing the rise of the next generation of stars in this thrilling field, Puppi expressed.

With the recent triumph of Peruvian Dota 2 teams at the Pan American eSports Games, Peru’s status as a dominant force in the eSports world has been solidified. This significant achievement not only showcases the country’s talent and dedication in gaming but also paves the way for a brighter future for eSports in Peru.
