Pembroke College in Cambridge has apologised for hosting an underwater-themed May Ball following reports that one of its alumni, billionaire Hamish Harding, is currently missing in an underwater vehicle. The ball featuring nautical-themed music including Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” from the Titanic film, took place on 21 June, the same day that Harding’s submersible, that was exploring the Titanic wreck, went off the radar. The year-long May Ball theme, Into the Depths, was selected before the ill-fated expedition, and the committee stated that had they known about the tragedy, they would have chosen a different theme. Criticism has been levied against the Pembroke May Ball committee by some who claim that it was “insensitive given the circumstances”. The event’s website has been taken down and its Instagram page is now private. The search for the Titan submersible is continuing.
