India reached an all-time high of 223.23 GW in peak power demand on June 9, according to data from the government, suggesting that the impact of unseasonal rains on electricity consumption is diminishing. In April, the power ministry had estimated that peak power demand would easily touch 229 GW during this summer. However, the rains affected demand as temperatures cooled, with fewer people using energy-intensive appliances such as air conditioners, experts said. Despite this, the government took steps to prepare for any unprecedented rise in demand by asking imported coal-fired power plants to run at full capacity until June 15 and domestic coal-fired plants to import coal for blending to avoid any shortfall.
