PDP Chief and Leaders Under House Arrest on 4th Anniversary of Article 370 Abrogation
Srinagar, Aug 5 (PTI) PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti claims that she and several senior leaders of her party were placed under house arrest, while others were detained on the fourth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.
According to Mehbooba Mufti, she and other senior PDP leaders were put under house arrest following a midnight crackdown where many party members were unlawfully detained in police stations. She took to Twitter to express her concerns, stating that the actions of the government expose their false claims about normalcy in the region. She also highlighted the contradiction of giant hoardings celebrating the abrogation of Article 370 while brute force is being used to suppress the genuine sentiment of the people.
The former chief minister further urged the Hon’ble Supreme Court to take note of these developments, especially since Article 370 is currently under consideration.
This comes amidst the Kashmir Valley’s preparations to mark the fourth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The abrogation, which took place on August 5, 2019, resulted in the region being divided into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
While the Indian government claims that the situation in the region has returned to normalcy, the house arrest and detention of political leaders suggest a different reality. Critics argue that these measures are indicative of a prevailing atmosphere of fear and the stifling of dissent.
The decision to abrogate Article 370 had sparked widespread protests and condemnation, with many arguing that it undermined the region’s autonomy and violated the rights of its people. Supporters of the move, on the other hand, believe that it will bring development and integration to the region.
The current developments shed light on the ongoing tensions and complexities surrounding the abrogation of Article 370. It remains to be seen how the situation unfolds and what consequences these actions might have on the political landscape of the region.
