Popular password manager Dashlane has introduced a new login method that allows users to access their accounts without a master password. This move aims to enhance convenience and security for Dashlane users. Going forward, users will be able to log in using their biometrics like fingerprint or face scan, as well as a device-specific PIN. Alongside this passwordless login feature, Dashlane has also developed a patent-pending technique for transferring the cryptographic key that secures users’ vaults between devices, enabling cross-platform usage.

While Dashlane has previously supported passwordless technology in the form of passkeys for website logins, this is the first time users can access their own vaults without a password. The motivation behind this change lies in the company’s research, which reveals that compromised passwords account for 80% of hacking-related breaches this year. Additionally, phishing attacks targeting passwords have become increasingly sophisticated. By eliminating the need for passwords altogether, Dashlane’s passwordless technology removes the credentials hackers typically seek during cyber attacks. The cryptographic key used in lieu of passwords is also tied to the user’s device, adding an extra layer of security.

To address concerns about account recovery for passwordless users who lose their devices, Dashlane has implemented an easier method. Users can utilize another device that is logged into their Dashlane account to regain access.

The process for setting up a passwordless account on mobile devices is straightforward. Once created, users can log in on other devices by accessing the settings menu on the mobile app and selecting Add new device. A security challenge will appear, ensuring authentication for the new device.

Several prominent services have already adopted passwordless solutions, including Amazon, PayPal, eBay, BestBuy, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and X. Other password managers such as NordPass, 1Password, and Bitwarden also support the creation and storage of passwordless accounts.

This move marks a significant step towards more secure and convenient authentication options for users. By eliminating the reliance on easily compromised passwords, Dashlane’s passwordless technology reinforces the protection of user data. With an increasing number of services embracing passwordless solutions, it is evident that this new approach to authentication is becoming the go-to method for enhancing digital security.
