Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami has criticized Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for announcing plans to build a dam at Mekedatu across the Cauvery river. Palaniswami has urged DMK leader Stalin to take action to protect Tamil Nadu’s interests and prevent the dam’s construction. Shivakumar had directed officials to prioritize the project, which had been promised during the election campaign. Palaniswami emphasized that the Cauvery is the lifeline of Tamil Nadu’s Delta districts and that the construction of the dam would violate the Dispute Tribunal’s ruling that no project should be undertaken in the river without the riparian state’s consent. The AIADMK has pledged to strongly protest, saying they cannot trust the DMK government to stop the project.
