The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered former Prime Minister Imran Khan to surrender himself in the murder case of lawyer Abdul Raazaq Shar. Shar, a senior Supreme Court lawyer, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Quetta on June 6. He had previously filed a petition against Khan, accusing him of illegally dissolving the National Assembly. In response to Khan’s attempt to appeal the quashing of an FIR against him in the murder case, the Supreme Court has asked him to appear in person. Khan’s lawyer had also rejected the establishment of a joint investigation team to look into the lawyer’s murder. Alongside this case, Khan is also facing another investigation related to the leak of national secrets. The Interior Minister has warned that Khan could be arrested if he does not cooperate with the investigation into the encryption probe. This warning came after a close aide to Khan accused him of using a diplomatic cable from the Pakistani mission to the United States to build an anti-establishment narrative. It remains to be seen how these legal troubles will affect Khan’s political career.
