Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed authorities to make foolproof arrangements for handling a potential flood-like situation in the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers. As heavy rain is expected in many cities of Punjab today, the Chenab and Ravi rivers may be affected by the incessant downpour in India’s northern states. The prime minister has urged authorities to be prepared for timely and safe evacuations and to raise awareness among the people in the affected areas.

The recent rescue of 95 people, including five Rangers personnel, who were stranded near the Ravi and Tawi rivers after water levels rose to dangerous levels, has prompted the prime minister to appreciate the efforts of the Rangers and Rescue 1122 personnel. He commended their timely evacuation and assistance in rescuing those trapped by floodwaters and expressed gratitude on behalf of the nation.

The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) of Pakistan has issued a report predicting medium to high-level flooding in the Ravi River at Jassar. It also warned of moderate-level flooding in the nullahs of Ravi during the next 24 hours. Additionally, the Chenab River at Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad is currently at a medium-flood level, while all other major rivers are flowing at their normal rates. The FFD further revealed that moist currents from the Bay of Bengal are penetrating the upper catchments of the River Sutlej up to 5,000 feet.

As authorities gear up for potential flooding, the prime minister’s directive emphasizes the importance of preparedness and efficient response. Timely evacuations and spreading awareness among the people in vulnerable areas are crucial in mitigating the risks associated with heavy rainfall. The appreciation for the rescue efforts reflects the recognition of the dutiful personnel who play a vital role in safeguarding lives during such natural disasters.

These measures taken by the government aim to ensure the safety and well-being of the population, minimize property damage, and facilitate the efficient handling of any flood-like situation that may arise. The authorities will continue to monitor the water levels and weather conditions closely to take necessary actions promptly.

As the rain continues to pour, it is essential for everyone living in flood-prone areas to stay vigilant and follow the instructions provided by the local authorities. By working together and being prepared, Pakistan can effectively deal with any potential flood-related challenges and protect its citizens from harm.
