Pakistan Rejects Indian Court Ruling on Kashmir’s Status, Seeks International Intervention

Pakistan has dismissed the recent ruling by India’s top court regarding the status of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani has written letters to the United Nations (UN), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the European Union (EU), urging their attention and intervention on the matter.

The ruling, issued by the Supreme Court of India on Monday, upheld the Indian government’s decision to revoke the special status of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. However, Pakistan argues that the disputed territory cannot be determined under domestic law in accordance with international norms.

In the letters addressed to the international organizations, Jilani highlighted the illegality of the Indian court’s decision, emphasizing that the final status of an internationally recognized disputed territory should not be determined solely by domestic legislation or judicial verdicts.

Moreover, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry stated that Jilani condemned the unlawful measures taken by Indian authorities to consolidate their occupation of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and suppress the rights of the Kashmiri people.

According to Jilani, India’s actions aim to alter the demographic structure and political landscape of the region, disempowering the Kashmiri community in their own land. He also deemed the judgment a breach of international law, particularly relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 122 (1957).

The foreign minister called upon the UN Security Council to ensure the full implementation of the resolutions on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, emphasizing that India’s unlawful measures cannot override the provisions outlined by the international community.

The dispute over Kashmir dates back to the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, with both countries claiming the entire region. Several wars and ongoing conflicts have further exacerbated the issue, leading to numerous human rights abuses and thousands of reported casualties since 1989.

Pakistan’s rejection of the Indian court ruling reflects the deep-rooted dispute over Kashmir and the differing perspectives on its status. By seeking international intervention, Pakistan hopes to draw attention to what it sees as India’s unlawful measures in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

As the situation unfolds, the international community will closely monitor the developments and the responses of the UN, OIC, and EU to Pakistan’s plea for intervention. The Kashmir issue remains a central point of contention between India and Pakistan, and its resolution continues to pose a significant challenge.

The confrontation between these nuclear-armed neighbors raises concerns over regional stability and underscores the pressing need for a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and aspirations of the Kashmiri people while upholding international law.

Moving forward, the attention of the international community will play a crucial role in addressing the longstanding Kashmir dispute and facilitating a peaceful resolution that respects the interests of all parties involved.
