Pakistan Cricket Board’s incoming chairman, Zaka Ashraf, has rejected the hybrid model proposed by his predecessor Najam Sethi for the upcoming Asia Cup. The tournament is due to take place in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in September, but Ashraf’s comments could put Pakistan’s World Cup participation in jeopardy. With the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) executive body approving the hybrid model, if Ashraf doesn’t change his stance, the Asia Cup could be held without Pakistan as a five-nation tournament. Ashraf, who is set to be appointed as the PCB chairman by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, said that he did not agree with the inconsequential games being held in Pakistan when they have hosting rights. Ashraf’s tough stance on the Asia Cup could worsen relations with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who had already refused to travel to Pakistan due to the prevailing geopolitical situation. It remains unclear whether Pakistan’s demand to play World Cup matches at a neutral venue will be accepted by the BCCI or the International Cricket Council.
