Recent Dublin Overdoses Linked to New Synthetic Drug More Potent than Fentanyl

A concerning rise in overdoses has been reported in Dublin city centre, with 57 cases recorded in recent weeks. Investigations have revealed a potential link to a new synthetic drug that has caused numerous fatalities in the US and UK. The substance, known as N-Pyrrolidino Protonitazene, is a type of synthetic opioid similar to fentanyl but reportedly even stronger. Experts warn that it is estimated to be 25 times more potent than fentanyl, which is already responsible for a significant number of overdose deaths in the US.

Upon detecting the presence of nitazene, forensic researchers confirmed that the substance was found at the scene of at least one overdose in Dublin. As a result, a widespread public health campaign has been launched by the Health Service Executive (HSE) and drug treatment agencies to raise awareness among Dublin’s heroin users about the dangers associated with this new drug. Road signs and posters have been strategically placed throughout the city to inform and warn the public.

Further testing has confirmed that the synthetic drug in question is N-Pyrrolidino Protonitazene, marking its first identification in Ireland. This particular synthetic substance has gained attention due to its significantly greater potency compared to fentanyl. While two fatal overdoses have been reported to the HSE this month—one linked to heroin use and another to cocaine—no definitive connection has been established to the new synthetic drug. However, the potential threat it poses to vulnerable individuals cannot be ignored.

The emergence of N-Pyrrolidino Protonitazene was first documented in the US in January 2023. Alerts issued by the US-based Centre for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE) indicate that the substance has already been responsible for 20 overdose deaths in the US and UK. Nitazene is often found in conjunction with fentanyl, cocaine, and benzodiazepines. The CFSRE has emphasized the drug’s potential to cause harm and its high public health concern on a global level.

There is growing concern among drug workers and gardaí that the recent halt in heroin production in Afghanistan, following the Taliban’s rise to power, is leading to an increase in alternative sources for the drug. These new sources may be more likely to mix heroin with synthetic opioids, resulting in potentially lethal combinations.

The HSE spokeswoman stressed an extreme risk in Dublin and urgently advises drug users to exercise caution, particularly when encountering new batches of heroin, purchasing from unfamiliar suppliers, or experimenting with different types of drugs. To mitigate risks and potentially save lives, health officials and drug treatment agencies recommend carrying naloxone, a drug that can help reverse the effects of a heroin overdose. Several successful cases of naloxone usage have been reported in Dublin over the past month.

The HSE has also made naloxone readily available, free of charge, at each Dublin Addiction Service location. Collaboration with support services continues to ensure preparedness for potential incidents in the future, with ongoing monitoring and data review to inform public health strategies moving forward.

Tony Duffin, the chief executive of the Ana Liffey Drug Project, expressed concern that the prevalence of nitazene will lead to repeated spikes in overdoses. Mr. Duffin emphasized the urgent need to address the ongoing threat posed by this drug, as it shows no signs of dissipating.

In the face of this crisis, users, families, and the wider community are urged to prioritize education and the critical role of naloxone in saving lives. By remaining vigilant and informed, individuals can play an active role in preventing further tragedy as Dublin confronts the alarming presence of this new synthetic drug.
