In a shocking revelation, Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar recently disclosed that over 6,800 women and girls have gone missing in Maharashtra in the past year, raising serious concerns about the state’s law and order situation. Pawar criticized the current government for its inaction in addressing the escalating attacks on women and girls.
According to official figures collected from various municipal corporations, police commissionerates, and rural police headquarters, a total of 2,458 women and girls have disappeared between January and May 2023 in four major municipalities in Maharashtra. This includes 738 from Mumbai, 937 from Pune, 721 from Thane, and 62 from Solapur. Information on missing women and girls from other civic corporations is currently unavailable. Additionally, 4,431 females have disappeared from 14 districts in the state.
Pawar emphasized the urgency of addressing this matter and demanded that the state’s Home Minister take immediate measures to ensure the safety of women and girls. He called for a thorough investigation into their whereabouts and urged the government to facilitate their safe return to their families.
Pawar also criticized the ruling Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party regime, which will celebrate its first anniversary in office, for the recent spate of riots in the state. He alleged that these riots were orchestrated and questioned whether they were politically motivated ahead of upcoming elections. Similar concerns have been raised by the Maha Vikas Aghadi allies Congress and Shiv Sena-UBT.
As this disturbing trend of missing women and girls persists in Maharashtra, it is crucial that authorities take immediate action to address the issue and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. The government must prioritize the protection of women and girls and work towards creating a secure environment for them. Furthermore, a thorough investigation should be conducted into the recent riots to identify any potential political motives behind them.
It is hoped that the government will take these concerns seriously and implement effective measures to safeguard its citizens. The disappearance of thousands of women and girls is a grave issue that requires swift action and accountability. Maharashtra must strive to enhance its law and order situation and restore the faith of its residents in the state’s ability to ensure their safety and security.
