Assam Rifles, a paramilitary force, has successfully evacuated over 50,000 displaced persons from all communities in violence-hit Manipur, providing them safe shelter, food, and medicines. The first responder to come to aid the people of Manipur, the AR carried out selfless service in rescuing and evacuating people of all communities from the zone of violence. Despite the service’s herculean efforts, the AR faced criticism due to polarized narratives.
The security forces provided a conducive environment for the first round of peace talks, initiated by Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state on May 30th. Also, the AR provided round-the-clock protection to the convoy of civil trucks carrying essentials such as supplies, medicines, and oil to Imphal Valley, resulting in approximately 9,000 trucks moving on the highway without any incidents since the convoy’ commencement on May 14th.
In May 2023, the violence that erupted in Manipur played a crucial role in the efforts of the Assam Rifles to mitigate the situation. After the imposition of curfew and restriction on movement in the state, the locals’ life came to a standstill, lacking basic amenities like rations, water, shelter, and medical aid. However, AR mobilized their resources to the violence-hit districts and was the silver lining for the locals in the cloud of ethnic riots. The AR transported thousands of residents safely to relief camps, providing them security, medical assistance, food, accommodation, and communication facilities.
Assam Rifles collaborated with the civil administration to organize peace meets with all stakeholders in various districts, established a visible presence, and instilled a sense of security among the local population. Furthermore, medical camps were set up to cater to the locals’ healthcare needs. In the face of adversity, AR’s unwavering dedication and selfless service restored the affected people’s hope and faith in humanity.
Assam Rifles is the most potent force in the North East region whose personnel have made the supreme sacrifice to bring peace to the state and are relentlessly working for the people of the North East. However, despite their efforts to bring stability to the community, the AR has received criticism. Nevertheless, the AR’s undaunted service over the years has preserved the unflinching faith of the people.
