More than one in five of the world’s migratory species are at risk of extinction due to climate change and human encroachment, according to a new report by the United Nations. Published on Monday, the report highlights the significant threats faced by migrating animals and the urgent need for action to protect their populations.

The report reveals that out of the 1,189 species covered by a UN convention established in 1979, 44% have experienced population declines, and up to 22% could vanish completely. These findings are based on assessments and data from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and the Living Planet Index, which tracks population numbers for more than 5,000 species since 1970.

Migration plays a crucial role in the survival of many species, as billions of animals travel across various landscapes each year to find food and breed. However, unsustainable pressures such as hunting, overfishing, and habitat loss pose significant risks to these animals. Not only do these threats endanger the species, but they also have broader consequences for food supplies and livelihoods.

The report emphasizes the urgency of addressing these issues and calls on governments to take immediate action. Amy Fraenkel, executive secretary of the UN Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, highlights the importance of implementation in tackling these threats. She stresses the need to consider the top levels of government decision-making to ensure the protection of nature while addressing human needs.

Human activities have been identified as the most significant threat to migratory species, impacting 70% of the species covered by the UN convention. Additionally, habitat loss affects up to 75% of these species, highlighting the necessity of preserving ecological connectivity between isolated ecosystems. The report emphasizes the importance of avoiding disruption to habitats and migration paths when implementing infrastructure projects to minimize the negative impacts on migratory species.

Climate change further exacerbates the challenges faced by migrating animals. The report emphasizes that the changes predicted for years are now occurring, causing disruptions to migration patterns, heat stress, and more frequent destructive weather events such as droughts and forest fires. These shifts add to the urgency of addressing the threats to migratory species.

The UN Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species is currently holding its meeting in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where new species will be considered for protection. As part of its efforts, the convention will launch a program to provide technical assistance to countries for more effective habitat protection.

Conservationists are urging governments to fulfill their pledge under the global biodiversity agreement, which aims to set aside 30% of the world’s land and sea territories for nature by 2030. By honoring this commitment, there is hope for positive change in the next UN report.

The UN’s first-ever report on migratory animals highlights the critical need for action to protect these species from the threats of climate change and human activities. Addressing these challenges is essential for preserving biodiversity, safeguarding food supplies, and protecting livelihoods. With governments, organizations, and individuals working together, there is hope for a sustainable future for migratory species and the ecosystems they rely on.
