Over 1,500 activists, academics, lawyers, and civil society leaders from across India have come together to condemn the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against a fact-finding team that visited Manipur. The National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) team, consisting of Annie Raja, Nisha Sidhu, and Deeksha Dwivedi, were charged with several criminal offenses including conspiracy to wage war against the Government of India and promoting enmity between groups.

The joint statement issued by activists and human rights bodies demanded the immediate closure of the FIR against the NFIW team, as well as action against the police responsible for registering the case. Prominent figures such as advocate Prashant Bhushan, activist Kavita Krishnan, and former UGC chief Jagdeep Chhokar have signed the statement, alongside international academics and rights bodies.

The signatories defended the NFIW team’s right to conduct their fact-finding visit and support their conclusion that the violence in Manipur was State-sponsored. They argued that the FIR violated their constitutional right to know and called for peace-building efforts between the Kuki-Zomi and Meitei communities.

The activists’ demand for the closure of the FIR reflects concerns about the freedom of expression and the right to conduct investigations in India. The joint statement highlights the need to protect these fundamental rights while holding the State accountable for its actions.

The controversy surrounding the FIR against the fact-finding team raises questions about the independence of human rights activists and the challenges they face in their work. It also underscores the importance of upholding democratic values and ensuring that dissenting voices are protected.

This collective condemnation by activists, academics, lawyers, and civil society leaders signifies the broader recognition of the need for transparency and accountability in India. It is a call to protect the rights of individuals and organizations involved in human rights work and to create an environment where their efforts can flourish.

The joint statement serves as a reminder that the right to information and the pursuit of justice are integral to a functioning democracy. It reiterates the pivotal role that activists and human rights defenders play in uncovering truth, seeking justice, and advocating for the rights of marginalized communities.

The FIR against the NFIW fact-finding team brings into focus the power dynamics between the State and civil society organizations, as well as the responsibility of authorities in facilitating an environment where human rights can be safeguarded.

As the movement gains momentum and garners support from diverse sections of society, it is crucial for the government to address the concerns raised by the activists and initiate dialogue to resolve the issue amicably. This would not only restore faith in the legal system but also be a step towards ensuring a more inclusive and equitable society.

Going forward, it is important for the government to reevaluate its approach towards dissent and criticism, and to protect the space for activists, academics, and civil society leaders to carry out their vital work. Upholding the principles of freedom of expression and allowing for independent investigations is integral to building a just and democratic society.

The joint statement by activists, academics, lawyers, and civil society leaders sends a powerful message that the suppression of dissent will not go unnoticed or unchallenged. It serves as a reminder of the collective strength of those who believe in justice, human rights, and equality. Only by embracing this strength and standing together can society hope to overcome injustice and create a world where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect.
